Movement Ecology During Pregnancy- Washington FULL

$490Purchase required to enroll

August 25th-26th, Sequim, Washington

Movement Ecology During Pregnancy: An educational retreat for doulas, midwives, physical therapists, pre/postnatal fitness trainers…and those they tend to!

Join Katy Bowman and a community of your fellow movement and birthing professionals in beautiful Sequim, Washington, for two days of dynamic movement education, walking, nature, and reveling in the power of movement during pregnancy, birth, and birth support.

At this innovative and exciting Movement Matters retreat, join Katy Bowman in Sequim to engage in movement for better birth ecology.

Spend day one at the Nutritious Movement Center Northwest, where we’ll explore the complex ideas behind alignment, exercise, and movement before, during, and after pregnancy. Apply new and refined movements to your own body, so that as you tend to another’s physical needs, you’ll also be able to tend to your own.

Technical areas will include: making over sitting and standing for better loading, preparatory exercises for squatting, SI-joint stabilizing and mobilizing, and modifying all exercises to the body of your client. We’ll also cover the role walking plays in pregnancy and pelvic floor function, the difference between strollers, baby wearing, and baby carrying, and how to “vary your carry” (and adjust your alignment) for pain-free baby tending. We’ll touch on movement permaculture—that is, how to help new parents and parents-to-be fit in these moves into their rapidly changing lives.

But this retreat isn’t only about the people you tend to; it’s about learning to tend to yourself (and allowing us to tend to you just a little bit!). Following a day of indoor and outdoor coursework, let us Nourish you on Saturday evening with dinner at a local organic and gluten-free garden restaurant. On day two, we’ll take our movement trailside to the Dungeness river. After an outdoor clinic on pregnancy and pain-free walking, we’ll set out for 7 miles of walking practice together. Pregnancy, birthing, and birthing support are all physical feats, and on our walk, we’ll consider ways in which we can help our bodies accomplish challenging movements. We’ll also work on varying our own carry while learning more about movement ecology—how a parent’s movement can indeed be the facilitator of a child’s.

After our walking clinics, we’ll lunch at a nearby organic lavender farm, a local essential oil producer. We’ll engage in a small amount of lavender labor (bud separation) to refine and broaden our ideas of squatting, and we’ll get a private lesson on essential oil distillation from the farm owners.

We’re so excited to gather with birth and pregnancy workers, fitness professionals who work with mothers, and pregnant women who’d like to learn more about the movements that can best support their hardworking bodies.
